Our volunteers make such a difference in what we do, how we do it, and how well we do it, that their contributions are truly invaluable.

Last year, volunteers logged over 12,000 hours of service in support of Jefferson County Library Foundation events. We have volunteers who work regular shifts at the Foundation office, donation areas in libraries, and at the Used Book and Gift Shop, and we have many who donate their time for one or more shifts at book sales.

Margaret Coel To Be Featured At Friends Annual Luncheon

We are so excited that Margaret Coel will be joining us at this year’s Friends Luncheon. She’ll be there with books to sell and sign at the event. You definitely won’t want to miss this one!

Margaret Coel is the New York Times best-selling author of the acclaimed Wind River mystery series set among the Arapahos on Wyoming’s Wind River Reservation and featuring Jesuit priest Father John O’Malley and Arapaho attorney Vicky Holden.

The novels have received wide recognition. They have been on the bestseller lists of numerous newspapers, including the New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, the Denver Post and the Rocky Mountain News. Five novels have received the Colorado Book Award. The Spirit Woman received the Willa Cather Award for Best Novel of the West and was a finalist for the Western Writers of America’s Spur Award for Best Novel.

She is a native Coloradan who hails from a pioneer Colorado family. The West — the mountains, plains, and vast spaces — are in her bones, she says.

Stouts & Stories/Ales & Tales — a beer tasting bonanza!

Plenty of cars and plenty of hops — that was the essence of JCLF’s fall fundraiser, Stouts & Stories/Ales & Tales. This benefit was the kick-off to a six-week, go-on-your-own, county-wide Jeffco craft beer tour, and it was held Thursday, September 27, from 5 to 9 p.m. at the colorful Lamar Street Center in Arvada.

“This event was hosted by Jefferson County Public Library in 2017, and it received a tremendous response from the community,” said Jo Schantz, executive director of JCLF. “The Foundation decided to turn this into a fundraiser and partner with local businesses to help raise money for Library programs.” Each year, the Foundation raises tens of thousands of dollars to help support the Library’s STEM/STEAM initiatives, early childhood literacy and the hugely popular Summer Reading program.

Nearly 150 guests attended the event, which featured two tantalizing food trucks, games of skill (such as giant beer pong and ladder ball), a fun photo booth (complete with zany props), plus gallons of beer samples from 11 local craft brewers. Tickets were $15 for general admission, and those who purchased VIP tickets (at $25 each) were able to visit the Steel Affairs showroom to drool over rare and collectible cars, including classic Lamborghinis.

“It was such a fun event!” said Allison Lausten, JCLF’s bookkeeper, who attended the event with her husband, Matt. “We really enjoyed tasting all the different craft brews, plus we listened to great live music and played some of the super-sized games.”

Our silver-voiced emcee and Board member Neal Browne was in charge of announcements, and prize drawings were held throughout the evening, hosted by Mel Rutledge and Jim Berry, two radio personalities from media sponsor KOOL 105. In addition, a pair of local brewers were tapped on as featured speakers for “brew talks” where they discussed craft brewing techniques. Toe-tapping live music was provided by an energetic band appropriately named Half Pint and the Growlers.

Patrons who visit the breweries listed in the passports receive a stamp for enjoying the breweries’ special offers. Stamped passports can then be redeemed for prizes at the four Westerra Credit Union branch locations in Jeffco.

Celebrating our 2018 Foundation Volunteers!

What could be better than spending a summer afternoon enjoying good friends, good food and good fun? That “theme” was carried throughout our 2018 Volunteer Appreciation Picnic held on Friday, July 27, at Fruitdale Park in Wheat Ridge. This event marked a special time for the Jefferson County Library Foundation (JCLF) to celebrate, honor and applaud our wonderful volunteers.

“What a terrific way to say ‘thank you’ to so many of these dedicated individuals and couples,” said Tami Bandimere, president of the JCLF Board of Directors.  “All these volunteers work so hard — all year round — sorting books at the warehouse, helping with our Whale of a Used Book Sales and staffing the Friends Gift & Book shop at the Belmar Library. We couldn’t do all these things without them!”

Her words of praise ring especially true when we consider that JCLF’s volunteer corps provided 12,864 hours of volunteer support in 2017. That support translated into an amazing cash value of $317,612! (The Independent Sector values volunteer service at an average rate of $24.69 per hour.)

Nearly 60 volunteers, including JCLF Board members and Library staff members, were on hand for the noon-time feast, which featured a catered lunch from Frank’s Bar-B-Que, and a whole table full of delicious desserts.

This year, JCLF was pleased to honor Sharon Edwards with the Volunteer Leadership Service Award, and Al and Cheryl Cyr as our Volunteers of the Year. Retiring JCLF Board Vice President Jeannie Mann was selected to receive this year’s Elena Joyce Grissom Award. In a new twist, we also gave out special awards (super-sized doggie treats!) to a couple of four-legged volunteers who faithfully visit our warehouse each week — Remi, owned by Al and Cheryl Cyr, and Tuyok, whose owners are John Wilson and Dawn Jacoby.

Special thanks go out to Alison Egbers, JCLF’s office coordinator, for organizing the awards lunch and celebration event, and who also brought in an array of fun games, including corn hole, Jenga and an extra-large version of beer pong!

Each year, JCLF pays tribute to a special group of individuals who work hard and who continue to support our Foundation. And each year, we continue to be grateful for all you do! Thank you!

That’s right: libraries can also add to the economy, since they are a resource for local individuals and businesses. But they also provide jobs to those in the public library system, and even offer a place where many people spend time applying for jobs!

How to Show Support for Our Libraries in Jefferson County

  1. Visit the library! The more that locals use their library’s resources and programs, the easier it is for the public library to ask for both public and private funding.
  2. Volunteer for events and programs!
  3. Become a member of the library and you’ll have access to millions of book and article titles, dozens of local education programs and a whole lot more.
  4. Become a Friend of the Jefferson County Public Library!
  5. Vote for local representatives who support the library’s initiatives through government funding.

Last, but definitely not least, our local Jeffco libraries accept up to one box of good quality used books. If you have more than one box, bring them on by to our warehouse for Jefferson County Library Foundation!

When you donate good quality used books to us, we use those to re-sell online and at our book sales throughout the year. And proceeds help support our public library programs, such as continuing education, literacy, and multi-cultural events!

This means that you not only get to free up some shelf space in your home (say, for more new books to read!), but you help support your local community at the same time!

The Mystery Continues…with Murder, She Writes!

More than 20 years ago, the nation was shocked by the horrible death of JonBenét Ramsey, the tiny, six-year-old beauty pageant princess who was found tortured and murdered in the basement of her Boulder home in December 1996. It was a homicide that rocked our Colorado community, and yet the case has never been solved.

Paula Woodward, an award-winning author and former investigative journalist from Channel 9, KUSA-TV, reported on that story from its very beginning. In 2016, Woodward wrote a book about the murder, unveiling the evidence, interviews and police reports – including details that even the crime scene investigators missed! The title of her book begins with the killer’s own four ominous words scrawled in a ransom note found at the crime scene – We Have Your Daughter: The Unsolved Murder of JonBenét Ramsey, Twenty Years Later.

Woodward’s in-depth account of events surrounding JonBenét’s death were the focal point of Murder, She Writes!, a fundraising luncheon and audience-interactive conversation hosted by the Jefferson County Library Foundation (JCLF). Neal Browne, Woodward’s former KUSA colleague and a JCLF Board member, served as the event emcee.

The benefit was held on Friday, April 27, at the Club at Rolling Hills, 15707 W. 26th Avenue in Golden, and Woodward’s book was available for purchase and signing at the luncheon.

We want to thank our Murder, She Writes! event sponsors for their support: ICON Eye Care; LegalShield; Rocky Mountain Safety and Security; Dr. Jackie O’Beirne, DDS; the Cat Care Society; Front Range Workplace IT; and the Taurus Fund. The Most Underrated Resources Available at Your Local Jeffco Library

If you live in Jefferson County, you have access to a wide range of resources and tools provided by your local library system.

Although some of the main services such as renting out books and movies with a library card are pretty well known, we wanted to provide a list of many other opportunities that the Jefferson County Public Library (JCPL) offers!

Computer Classes

Whether you are someone who has never felt “tech-savvy” and need a few quick lessons on using computers properly, or you have a specific question on a computer software or online searching, JCPL has free classes you can join at a variety of locations!

Topics range from using Google Docs and Microsoft programs to email, job hunting and more! You can learn more about their computer classes online here.

Culture Pass

By far one of the best services JCPL provides is the Culture Pass! This is your “ticket” to participating metro-area cultural institutions, such as the Colorado State Parks, the Butterfly Pavilion, several museums and other arts centers.

With a JCPL library card, you can reserve a Culture Pass online up to 30 days in advance. Be sure to check out the details, instructions and other reservation requirements on the JCPL website!

If someone you know is a native Spanish speaker living in the Jefferson County area, they may not know about the many classes, events and other resources available to them in Spanish through JCPL!

Meeting & Study Rooms

Need a quiet place to work on a project? Have a hard time finding a good local place to meet with others?

Several of the Jeffco libraries offer small study rooms, as well as large meeting rooms available free of charge! Small study rooms can be used for up to 2 hours per day, hold up to six people and can be reserved up to 30 days in advance. Larger meeting rooms can be reserved up to 60 days in advance!

Computers, WiFi and Printing

With a valid library card you can reserve a computer at the library to use for research, job and college applications, and more! JCPL also offers laptops available for use at the Belmar, Columbine and Golden locations.

You also can use the WiFi networks and hot spots to connect to the internet for free! Other great technology services available include: printing, scanning and faxing. Visit JCPL’s website to learn more!

Even in today’s high-tech world, traditional hard copy books still have the amazing ability to offer inspiration, insight and education. And sometimes, there’s just nothing better than holding a book in your hand, rather than a cell phone or a tablet.

But what if you have too many books that you no longer need? Then it may be time to let them find new owners!

When you donate your books, you allow the opportunity to let those texts have new life. Whether they end up in the hands of a young teen looking for an exciting new story to read, or they become part of a collection on someone else’s shelf, donating your books expands their purpose and influence in a fascinating way.

You Can Support Your Local Library System

If you donate good books to JCLF, you are — in effect — supporting all of our public libraries in Jefferson County, Colorado!

We collect these books (and good quality CDs, DVDs and vinyl records!) for our book sales, which helps raise money in support of early childhood literacy, technology, education and other programs held at various libraries in our system. And for those that are rare collectibles or vintage books, we are happy to sell them online via our JCLF storefront — Jeffco Friends — to increase the monies we raise in support of Jefferson County Public Library!

It’s Time for Spring Cleaning

Have a few (or a bunch) of great books sitting on a shelf? Clear out the space by bringing in books by the box-load at our donation center in Wheat Ridge!

Or if you’re downsizing into a new home, consider going through your book cases to see which ones you think others will love reading as much as you did.

Our 2018 Friends Annual Meeting

There is an old Spanish proverb that states: “Life without a friend is like life without sun.” That’s why it turned into a very “sunny day” when the Jefferson County Library Foundation (JCLF) brought together many of our Friends of Jefferson County Public Library for the Friends Annual Meeting held on Friday, February 2, at the Wheat Ridge Recreation Center in Wheat Ridge.

This year’s event broke from the traditional breakfast occasion, and instead our Friends and guests enjoyed a buffet lunch with a Mexican theme — tacos and burritos, complete with an ample array of sauces and condiments prepared by our caterer, Bonfire Burritos.

The highlight of the luncheon was our keynote speaker, Scott Gibson, a Colorado author known for his amazing skills as a playwright, as well as for the very moving and sensitive novels he writes. Many of our guests were already familiar with Scott’s books, with titles such as: Stopping by Earth; Standing Outside of Life; and his latest work entitled Treading Deep Water. 

As Scott shared with us, he is a Colorado native, and he’s lived from one end of the state to the other, starting out in the southwestern corner in the small town of Pagosa Springs followed by stays in Leadville, Sterling and Greeley. He now has homes in Evergreen and Grand Lake, and most of these places have figured into one of more of his popular books. As a special tribute to JCLF and our Friends, Scott donated back a portion of his book sales that day to our nonprofit organization, helping us continue on as we support Jefferson County Public Library programs, events and activities.

We were happy to celebrate another year with our wonderful Friends of the Library, a membership and support group that assists JCLF in fundraising efforts, voluntarism and advocacy on behalf of Jefferson County Public Library.

Our Royal Tea was Royal Fun!

Just a few weeks ago, nearly 65 JCLF guests, sponsors, Board members and supporters made sure their little pinkies were all arched and ready to join the Jefferson County Library Foundation (JCLF) at its Royal Tea with Royalty benefit. This first-of-its-kind fall fundraiser was held on Friday, November 10, from 3:30-5:30 p.m. at the ever-elegant Briarwood Inn in Golden Tickets were $75 per person, and the simply smashing afternoon featured a four-course tea service (including a signature cocktail) along with a fabulous “mystery” auction and tea cup sale.

Our “royal” guest list included current and former pageant and scholarship winners from throughout Colorado, such as: 2017 Miss Wheelchair Colorado, 2017 Ms. Colorado Senior America, former Miss Fraternidad Hispana Colorado, former Miss Colorado USA, along with the 2018 Evergreen Rodeo Queen, Princess, and Jr. Princess. These stellar guests, all in their glittering tiaras and signature sashes, were seated among our paying guests all throughout the tea party.

But these royals weren’t the only headliners of the day. The afternoon’s entertainment featured a guest appearance by 2014 Ms. Colorado Senior America, Sharon Nuanes, a professional magician, who dazzled our audience with her clever sleight of hand by performing Le Magique Royale. Adding another special touch, 9NEWS Meteorologist Danielle Grant served as the celebrity emcee and took on the role as our “Vanna White” in helping to showcase the live auction items up for bid.

As a high point of the event, JCLF presented its 2017 Legacy Award to Board President Tami Bandimere. Tami, who has served on the JCLF Board for the past nine years, has worked tirelessly to assist JCLF, and she is also president of Bandimere Speedway.

We want to applaud and thank our event sponsors: Allegro Coffee Company, Cat Care Society, Frederick G. Fish Foundation, Genesee Commercial Group, Solera Bank, High Point Financial Group, Guaranty Bank and the Taurus Fund. And we give special thanks to JCLF’s continuing supporters, our Friends Community Partners: Westerra Credit Union, Bandimere Speedway and Pinkard Construction. We also want to acknowledge our terrific volunteer committee for helping to make the day a success: Kay Rowland, Char Harrington and Laura Kepler.

All told, the event helped us raise nearly $8,ooo, and proceeds will help support JCLF along with special Jefferson County Public Library programs and events, such as Summer Reading, Early Childhood Literacy and STEM/STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) activities. SPRING WHALE SALE MAKES A HUGE SPLASH!

The 2017 Spring Whale of a Used Book Sale – held June 1-4 at the Jeffco Fairgrounds – lived up to its name by bringing in a big “catch” of more than $70,000. These funds will help support Jefferson County Public Library programs such as STEM/STEAM, Summer Reading and Early Childhood Literacy. In addition to book sales, the event netted another $1,700 in Friends memberships and renewals.

“We were thrilled that so many people came to this year’s spring sale,” said Jenaveve Linabary, Office Manager for the Jefferson County Library Foundation. “We counted nearly 4,500 individuals total who joined us for the Friends-only Preview Night and throughout the following three days of the sale.”

In addition to this crew of happy book lovers, the Whale of a Used Book Sale was supported by a whole flotilla of sponsors: Westerra Credit Union, Bandimere Speedway, Pinkard Construction, The Book Stop, Stevinson Toyota West, Bean Fosters, and Etkin Johnson Real Estate Partners.

We were also grateful to these in-kind supporters who helped to provide food and beverages for our volunteers and for guests at the Friends Preview Night: Chick-fil-A, Olive Garden, Modern Market, Pepsi Bottling Company, Good Times Restaurants, Einstein Bagels, Macaroni Grill, Starbucks, Woody’s Wood Fired Pizza, King Soopers, and Safeway.

We want to send a big shout out to our faithful volunteers and to the hardworking Foundation staff who helped us produce this year’s event.

Westerra Credit Union Champions Friends

Speakeasy: A Different Drummer is a Success!

One of the youngest, and possibly the cutest, drummers of the evening meeting Ben Wysocki (The Fray).

We’re pleased to report that Speakeasy: A Different Drummer was a great success! More than 65 people attended the program, hosted by the Jefferson County Library Foundation, which featured three of Denver’s best-known drummers: Ben Wysocki (The Fray), Brian Nevin (Big Head Todd & The Monsters) and Nate Barnes (Mary Chapin Carpenter).

Brian, Nate and Ben fielded questions from an audience of fans and budding musicians on music, production, practice and their personal pathways to success. The audience was so engaged many of them lingered to talk with the drummers long after the program was over!

We also took the opportunity to educate this audience of 20-to-40-somethings on the magic of the Library. A slide show presentation, which was reinforced by library fun facts on Speakeasy question cards, highlighted the Library’s digital assets, including Hoopla, Lynda.com, Flipster and Zinio.

This unique Speakeasy also gave us a great opportunity to forge relationships with some valuable new community partners, including the City of Lakewood, City of Denver Arts & Venues, Shawn King, Colorado’s Music Ambassador, and, our sponsor, Drum City & Guitar Land. Our thanks to these partners and to all those who attended the event!

Our 2017 Friends Annual Meeting

On Friday morning, March 17, the Jefferson County Library Foundation was proud to host a special breakfast edition of the Friends of the Library’s Annual Meeting. We welcomed nearly 30 of these Friends and their guests at the Wheat Ridge Recreation Center for a morning of good conversation, great new information and an inspiring presentation by suspense novelist and Colorado native, Samuel Marquis.

As many avid readers may already know, Sam is a bestselling and award-winning author whose books include The Slush Pile Brigade and Blind Thrust. This acclaimed writer works by day as a VP-Principal Hydrogeologist with an environmental firm in Boulder, Colorado, and by night as the spinner of the Nick Lassiter-Skyler International Espionage Series, and the Joe Higheagle Environmental Sleuth Series. As a result of their popularity, his books have climbed to #1 on The Denver Post bestseller list. Sam’s Denver-based political thriller The Coalition was just announced as an Award-Winning Finalist of the Colorado Book Awards in the Thriller category.

After Sam’s presentation, our Friends and guests were able to purchase his most recent novels and have the books personally autographed. We were delighted to welcome Sam and his wife, Christine, to our event!

Our breakfast guests also learned about some exciting new changes in our Friends membership structure. We called on Kay Rowland, Secretary of the Friends Council, to walk us through the new member categories and show us the new Friends membership cards that will be available after April 1. The morning’s agenda also included a special update by Cindy Jaye, Public Services Manager for the Library, who brought us up-to-speed on this year’s county-wide Summer Reading challenge. Above all, this meeting was a time to honor our Friends and all they do to help our Foundation and our Jefferson County Public Library. How do Friends assist us?
