Legacy Giving
Legacy Gifts
How to Plan Your Giving
There are many flexible giving pathways to achieving your unique charitable vision. By pledging your commitment, you join a community of supporters who believe in the library and are honored as members of the Legacy Chapter. Membership in the Legacy Chapter is available to all supporters who are making deferred gifts through their estate plans. The Foundation encourages donors to complete and return a Donor Letter of Intent to become a member. There is no minimum contribution required. Here are some popular pathways to achieving your charitable goals:
Bequest by Will or Trust
One of the simplest ways to leave a lasting legacy is is through your will or trust. By simply including information in your estate planning documents, you can easily establish a charitable fund. You can bequest a specific dollar amount, a percentage of your estate or residue of the estate.
Retirement Plan
Naming Jefferson County Library Foundation as a beneficiary of your retirement plan – such as IRA, Keogh, 401(k) and 403(b) – is an opportunity to benefit your library and your heirs. These assets are the most heavily taxed; so it may be more effective for you to transfer assets to a tax-exempt organization, such as Jefferson County Library Foundation, and leave assets not subject to income tax to your heirs.
Life Insurance
By naming Jefferson County Library Foundation as a beneficiary of your life insurance policy, you can make a significant impact. There are a number of different ways you can gift a life insurance policy. You can irrevocably name Jefferson County Library Foundation as the owner of an existing policy, deduct a calculated value of the policy as a charitable gift or choose to name Jefferson County Library Foundation as the beneficiary of a life insurance policy that you continue to own. Charitable gifts made to Jefferson County Library Foundation to pay any future premiums are eligible for a tax deduction in the year the gifts are made.

Appreciated Securities and Property
You can normally deduct the full market value of appreciated long-term assets (investments and/or assets that you have held for over one year and one day). Assets include stocks, bonds, mutual funds, or personal assets such as real estate that has appreciated in value. One of the main benefits of donating long-term capital assets is that you don’t pay capital gains on the asset.
